Certain types of businesses may require different methods of accepting payment. While some retail stores may be perfectly content with a countertop terminal, businesses with technicians out in the field may require mobile payment capabilities, and businesses with an online store may require a virtual payment gateway. EMV is a new pin and chip-based security standard for payment cards that is set to replace current U.S. magnetic stripe cards. Pin and chip cards, such as EMV, have long been used in Europe and the rest of the world, and have been credited with significantly driving down the occurrence of fraud in participating countries, sometimes by as much as 70%. EMV cards only function with EMV-enabled terminals, so merchants with magnetic stripe-only terminals will need to upgrade their equipment prior to the October 2015 compliance deadline. After October 2015, merchants will be liable for fraud if they choose not to adopt EMV for their payment card processing.
All First American products are compliant with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), and utilize only the most advanced security features, such as Point-To-Point Encryption (P2PE) and tokenization.
PCI DSS stands for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. Compliance by merchants in the standards set by the council indicate a willingness by the merchant to protect the payment data of its customers from security breaches and other forms of data theft. All merchants that accept payment cards are required to be compliant. To learn more about PCI DSS, including how to determine your business’ compliance requirements, view the PCI Security Standards website.
In most cases, First American will be able to migrate your existing terminal over to First American. Exceptions include proprietary equipment that is locked by a previous payment processor, or equipment that is obsolete and/or non-compliant.
